The Gifts of the Magi

Matthew 2:1-12

 

Introduction:

A.   The Magi – v. 1

1.    It is from their name that our words magic and magician are derived.

a)   Daniel 6:8, 12, 15; Esther 1:19

b)   Nergalsarezer the Rabmag, chief of the Babylonian magi, was with Nebuchadnezzar when he attacked and conquered Judah (Jeremiah 39:3).

c)   Daniel 2:24-48; Daniel 6:4–9

 

B.   A Great Question – v. 2

1.    “Where is He Who has been born King of the Jews?”

2.    The Search we are all on.

a)   “We saw His Star in the East.”

b)   “We have come to worship Him.”

 

I.      The Quest of the Magi (vv. 1-10)

A.   The Star of Bethlehem

 

B.   The Purpose of the Magi

 

C.  When they saw the star they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

Finding God’s Will

1.      Follow the light God gives you

2.      God will confirm His will with His Word

3.      Obey God without question

4.      He will lead you each step of the way!

 

II.    The Worship of the Magi (v. 11)

A.   They came into the house

 

B.   They saw the child with Mary, His mother.

 

C.  They fell down and worshiped Him.

 

D.  They opened their treasures.

 

E.   They presented Him gifts.

1.    gold

2.    frankincense

3.    myrrh

For us to give

a)   gold

b)   frankincense

c)   myrrh

 

III.  The Return of the Magi (v. 12)

A.   Warned by God

 

B.   Departed by another way. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

1.    God calls each of us to come and worship the King.

2.    God expects our worship to be giving of self to Him for His glory!

3.    God expects us to leave by “another way” after we worship the King!
