How Not to Cut Off One’s Spirit

To block off any influences from others – e.g. love, hearing for you

Happens when:

  1. Conflict or any negative happening. Something we resist due to disagreement or misunderstanding.
  2. There is a moving away: a natural reaction
  3. Then we cut our spirits off – make a deliberate blockage
  4. Now comes a choice or decision
  5. What come of this is a reaction
    1. 1st reaction is open rebellion or suppressed rebellion
    2. 2nd reaction is a conspiracy – planning to get back at someone
  6. Then there is a falling away
    1. Spiritually
    2. Physically

Absalom and Peter are examples of those who have cut off their spirits.

Life dealt into compartments. When in a pressure situation, you build a wall and cut yourself off. Some people live only 10% of their lives due to this using only facts to live, e.g. “good morning”, etc. Jesus came to give us abundant life. He never cut His Spirit off from anyone!

Reasons for cutting spirits off:

  1. Misunderstanding
  2. Difference of opinion or view
  3. People are threatening you – normally due to more experience
  4. People do it on purpose to hurt you
  5. Pride – the prime reason – why – if we are humble and open, many of these things will not happen

Symptoms of a cut off spirit

  1. Withdrawal – feel uneasy if the person is in the vicinity or you don’t even face the person
  2. No communication – one of the greatest problems – 90% of problem is due to no communications
  3. An inner crisis of criticism
    1. Seek faults to make sure your points are right
    2. Have the audacity to say and express opinions
    3. Rejection of view, church, organization of the person. Can even reject the truth due to closeness of it – “ontken dit”
    4. Conspiracy
    5. Begin to sow negative things. You carry your own feelings over to others. Normally if you have it against a person, it carries on to leadership and later against God.
  4. Open rebellion or depression

In any relationship you must become vulnerable or it isn’t worth having. If we have wrong relationships with any family members, make it right or we will have problems in this area.

Absalom’s problems started due to this (2 Samuel 13). Absalom tolerated Amnon – didn’t speak good or bad – seemingly a good relationship until 2 years later.

Tolerance is not the answer for forgiveness as seen in Absalom’s story. After killing Amnon, he ran away. Why did Absalom flee? He never did seek God’s guidance. His guidance came from his pressure point.

2 Corinthians 5 – We have a ministry of reconciliation. People who ignore everything.

Tamar and Absalom – nothing said by Absalom – two years later he kills Amnon. Tamar and Amnon gave reasons for Absalom to be angry, but reason does not give reason to retaliate. Enough reason to do something, but it doesn’t give us the right to do it. It is God’s problem. Absalom thinks reason is enough to excuse murder.

Absalom burns Joab’s land to get him to him so he can speak – pride. Even after the murder had he stopped to send things out, things would have worked out. He needed to admit that he was wrong. He didn’t but now came the conspiracy against his family and then later open rebellion, e.g. Absalom by the gate. Being open at the wrong time and place with the wrong people can be dangerous. He stole the hearts of the people of Israel. Next he went out on the pretext of doing something for God. Meantime, he sent out spies. He also moved with 200 men. Be careful who you listen to.

Time is a test for anything! The person who is in rebellion and has cut off his spirit often looks on the ball for the Lord. Put calling – place and time. Fruit of it will verify it.

2 Samuel 18:9 – Absalom’s end. The Lord does not destroy us, but we ourselves and ungodly people.

Peter: John 21:3 – “I am going fishing.” Basically he said, “I am going back to my old life.” Fishing was more important that what Jesus had said. Peter had cut off his spirit. The two fires – one where he denied the Lord and the 2nd where Jesus restored and healed him. Peter was then prepared to follow Jesus.

Don’t force God to put fire to your field to get your attention2 Corinthians 13:5

Cut off spirit due to confusion from God’s will. Peter – Jesus dead. Everything seemed to crumble around him.

Cut off from the Truth – ie: harden our hearts against the Truth. James 4:17 – Know what to do and do not do it.
